J.I. Wainwright, L.P.C.
Mr. Wainwright is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 33 years of experience providing individual, marital and family therapy to adolescents and adults. He works utilizing an interpersonal, systemic, developmental, problem solving approach with humanistic values and the use of cognitive behavioral and solution focused techniques.
Mr. Wainwright is a graduate of The University of Virginia (BA in Psychology in 1970) and Virginia Commonwealth University (M.S. Rehabilitation counseling, 1976). He worked for 14 years for Chesterfield Mental Health, the last eight of which he held the position of Manager of Outpatient Therapy Services providing therapy and clinical supervision.
In 1990 Mr. Wainwright left Chesterfield and opened his own private practice in Richmond. During that time he taught group and individual counseling courses for twelve years at MCV in the graduate Department of Rehabilitation
Counseling, provided group counseling to chemically dependent patients at St John's Hospital and Westbrook Hospital and provided consultation to staff at Elk Hill Residential School for boys and therapy to the adolescent males.
In October, 2007 he became an associate with DBH. His specialties are in treating mood and anxiety disorders, personality disorders, substance abuse, chemical dependency, grief, stress, work burnout, and couples /marital therapy. He works with boys 12 years and older and girls age 15 and up.
Mr. Wainwright is also published in the field and has served as President of the Richmond Area Clinical Counselors Association.
